Quick Tips to Help With Morning Sickness

Although the term “morning sickness” is commonly used, it is in fact misleading since many women who are pregnant do experience nausea symptoms at other times besides the morning (although the morning remains the most intense).75% of women are affected by nausea and vomiting symptoms, usually beginning about week six and continuing through week 14 to 18; there are a few women, however, who continue experiencing symptoms throughout their pregnancies. But, no matter how long the symptoms last, it is an unpleasant condition which should not be dismissed just because it is common or temporary.
While the causes of symptoms of nausea during pregnancy have not been definitively identified, they are likely related to physical, hormonal, and even psychological factors.The most important of these is human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG, or the pregnancy hormone), whose rising levels tend to match rising feelings of nausea and vice versa; another important hormone is estrogen, which has been shown to increase sensitivity to aromas.
It is also believed by some researchers that women whose bodies normally react to stress with vomiting or “feeling sick” are more likely to experience morning sickness as a reaction to the stress of pregnancy.There is a great deal of common wisdom regarding natural (non-medication) nausea relief; although these strategies have not necessarily been scientifically tested, some women swear by them.
Avoid letting your stomach get so empty it growls – you should eat frequently during the day so there’s always “something in there”; be sure to keep some crackers by your bed so you can have something when you wake up.Let your stomach settle for about half an hour, and then get up – you may not experience as much nausea this way.In general, pregnant women will want to be slow and easy getting out of bed in the mornings.
Avoid fatty, rich, spicy, and acidic foods; experiment with high-carbohydrate and high-protein foods to see which depresses your nausea best.It is not recommended that you obligate yourself to eat anything which is causing you nausea, though this may mean having an unbalanced diet for a while.Food which are hot tend to have stronger aromas, which can cause nausea; therefore, eat mostly bland foods and try to have them at room temperature or cold.
If you have been vomiting, drinking lots of liquids is even more important than usual; try sipping sports drinks, cold fizzy drinks, and ginger teas or ales in between meals (so you don’t get too full).
There are many other actions you can take, like taking your vitamins at the end of the day or with food, using acupressure bands or hypnosis, and being careful to avoid non-food triggers like strong odors and car rides.Remember, just because morning sickness is common or temporary, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t seek relief; if none of these or other strategies work for you, talk with your doctor about potentially treating your nausea with medication.
