Relatives and friends join with the bride and groom to make the wedding a special celebration. There are so many things to attend to in the exceitement of planning the wedding that the bride will often ask for some help from friends and family to help her with the details of receptions, flowers, outfits and vehicles. You will find that relatives and friends will want to help.

The wedding attendants, including the best man and the matron of honor, have several duties to attend to as part of their duties. Their duties include helping the bride and groom get everything organized in time for the big day. They also help the bride and groom get ready on the wedding day, and help the day run smoothly.

From very early European times, the aristocrates and wealthy would present each other with gifts of sweets which was when the tradition of wedding favors for guests and attendants originated. They were known as bomboniere, the literal meaning of which is small box of sweets. Boxes made of gold, crystal and precious stones were the early bomboniere. Sugar was still rare and expensive in those days, so only the wealthy and the aristocrats could afford these gifts.

During the 13th century, the tradition of giving sugar-coated almonds developed as sugar became more affordable. Traditionally, the number of almonds is symbolic - the five almonds represent health, fertility, happiness, longevity and wealth. The sweet sugar coating combined with the more bitter almond was supposed to be representative of the bitter-sweet character of marriage.

Over time, the tradition became that these little gifts of almonds were presented to the wedding guests, at the same time as guests started giving the bride and groom more elaborate wedding presents. Previously wedding brides journeyed rather long distances just to pay for wedding invitations. The tradition of bomboniere still exists, but are sometimes called wedding favors or guest gifts. Several European countries still have the wedding tradition of giving the five almond bomboniere, often in lace or net bags that are decorated with lace and ribbons.

The gifts designed for the wedding guests have advanced beyond the sugar-coated almonds these days. Today, the more popular items may be a small photo frame with a photo of the couple, pens, champagne glasses pr scented candles. A former bridesmaid will be a very good lady to ask about for help with bachelorette party invitations or bridal shower ideas. Adding the names of the happy couple and the date of their wedding makes the gift more personal. The gifts are intended as a reminder of the wedding, as well as a way of saying thank you for being part of the wedding celebrations.

There are lots of ideas that can be used for these gifts of appreciation and they don’t have to be very expensive. There are many website that specialize in wedding favors, bomboniere and all things associated with weddings. You might buy from these onlone stores or not, but you will probably get lots of ideas and inspiration from them.

Some brides like to make their own wedding favors. Go online to a stationary supplier and you will find different designs of little boxes. Using your wedding theme, you can decorate the outside of the box and then add some chocolates to it. To finish off your beautiful wedding favors, add a gift tag with each guest’s name, and then tie it up with ribbon that co-ordinates with your theme for the perfect bomboniere. Maybe you could consider making the chocolates yourself at home.
